The long wait of the good people of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA finally paid off recently as the Governor of Lagos state, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-olu was physically present in the council to commission the capital projects that their Chairman, Dr. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed has embarked on. The projects which include the new Apapa-Iganmu secretariat complex named in honour of the National Leader of All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu; thirteen (13) newly constructed and rehabilitated roads; a library complex; and a primary health centre were commissioned when the Governor visited the council.
Describing the administrative complex and other landmark projects as ‘symbolic strides’, Governor Sanwo-olu shared: ‘I have no doubt that these new complexes will provide the much-needed conducive work environment for public servants working in the councils and enhance their productivity and better service delivery. While projects such as these are really a commendable initiative, as they will have a great impact on the workforce at large; it is important to emphasize the need for all of us to understand that public infrastructure are part of our commonwealth being provided with public funds.
‘We must safeguard them against vandalism, as witnessed in the State in the couple of weeks ago’ as he urged residents to take ownership of the projects, asking them to protect the infrastructure initiated for their use.
The host of the event and Chairman of Apapa-Iganmu LCDA, Hon. Mrs. Funmilayo Akande-Mohammed was full of appreciation to the Governor for visiting the local council and commissioning the projects, ‘I am fulfilled today. It is the happiest day of my life. I have been dreaming to see my able Governor in my local government. It’s hasn’t happened before. The Governor we have before used to be afraid of my local government, they believe our local government is a bad area and I have been telling them that the devil will find work for any idle hand. But now, our youths are working. They are not doing any bad thing again. I want to show the world that Apapa-Iganmu is a different place entirely which I have been able to achieve today. I say a big thank you to my able Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu. He also gave a new appointment today to Hon. Babatunde Adewale as Special Adviser (non-cabinet) on Community Development.’
‘My Governor has said that I should go ahead with other projects and see where we can get before the term ends. By the grace of God I have three more roads I want to do interlocking. We are ready to commence working at the Secretariat and the health centre. We have four doctors and we have nurses so we will start immediately. We have our pharmacy, consulting room, doctor’s room, labour room, so we are ready to go.’
On education, Mrs. Akande-Muhammed stated: ‘I don’t take it lightly with education because that is the only way one can excel in life. Every time I give out JAMB and GCE forms. I still want to do bursary for students who passed the last JAMB. I want to do more, you recall I distributed 10000 bags for primary schools. I have for secondary schools too but the hooligans have carried it thinking it is money but the bag has our logo and name. It’s not useful for them, if they can return the bags I will give to the secondary school students.’
Present at the occasion was Hon. Hakeem Ajasa Bamgbola who added: ‘I think this is one of the achievements of creating more local government areas in terms of getting to the grassroots. That is what we are seeing today. Today might not have come to reality but we thank God and Asiwaju Tinubu that said we must have more local governments and thus, the projects we are having today. We appreciate the council chairman for what she is doing for her community but we trust her to do more for the community.’
